.🚗About the Piece🚗.
This was originally for a contest hosted by SunKenjiVT, a vtuber, over on Twitter. He wanted a new outfit design for his existing model. I decided to submit an entry and try my hand at designing a costume for this content creator.

.🚗Sketches🚗.
I drew up very simple sketches.. I blocked out the shape of the character and then roughly drew the outline of the body where I would dress him up like a barbie doll.

.🚗Outfit Sketch🚗.
The colors of the original model reminded me of a race car drivers outfit since it had reds and yellows, so I ran with it. The original model also had some interesting shoes and I really wanted to incorporate them with this design. So I made them floppy since I assume racing on a hot track makes your feet sweaty. The hat I wasn't 100% sure if I wanted it to be worn or just placed on his belt like a "cool kid" so I drew up both versions. I wanted to display his hair and not have it crushed under a hat.

.🚗Alt. Outfit Sketch🚗.
I sketched out the helmet version of the outfit since no racer is complete without a helmet. But then I thought "he's a vtuber, how could I convey the racer energy if rigging a whole car would be difficult?" Then I remembered the car costumes kids wear for Halloween. Bingo. I added the idea onto the sketch almost immediately and could not stop smiling. To top it all off, the vtuber could make jokes about it like "oh this is totally not Lightning McQueen from the hit Disney Movie Cars, Cars 2, etc."

I took the sketches and decided not to clean them up. I wanted to plan out the colors as soon as possible so I could really see what the final concept would look like. All I did was set up the stage for the designs to sit side by side.

.🚗Color🚗.
My first thought was to use the original colors of the character since they were what inspired the theme. All the colors used were eye dropped from the reference sheet. I just remixed them and put them in different places, distinguishing the different parts of the costume and keeping true to the original design.

.🚗Details + Separates🚗.
Here are the final pieces for the contest. They included the character sheet with details of smaller bits that someone might miss. I also included the 3 designs in their own separate files to highlight each one individually. The design sadly did not win, however it was a very fun challenge and I hope to do it again!
